Fredericksburg Christian School Presents: Frankenstein: Conversations with a Monster
Thursday October 24, 2024 9:25am - 10:10am EDT
Victor Frankenstein is remitted to St. Anne De Bellevue psychiatric hospital following the death of his wife Elizabeth. He recounts his experiences with his creation, highlighting the emotional scars from his past actions and the darkness that has consumed him. Despite his attempts to understand and diagnose him, Doctor Laurent remains skeptical of Victor's claims about the Creature, seeing it as a product of his fractured psyche rather than a tangible entity. Victor's tragic pursuit of knowledge and ambition has led to his psychological unraveling, serving as a cautionary tale about the consequences of overreaching in both scientific and personal aspirations, and leaving the audience to ponder the complex interplay between creator and creation, reality and delusion.

Grappling with Consent
Thursday October 24, 2024 10:30am - 11:30am EDT
Since the development of Intimacy Direction, theatre artists have been grappling with how to stage physical moments of touch ORGANICALLY through consent.  Virginia Tech just produced Selina Fillinger's hilarious farce, "POTUS: Or Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive" that required everyone in the creative team and cast to grapple with actual, physical grappling onstage.

Virginia Tech Fight and Intimacy Director Cara Rawlings will guide you through improvisational tools she used to help actors in the show develop organic, repeatable, and consensual choreography for a PHYSICAL GRAPPLING moment like the one Fillinger describes in the following Act 2 stage directions: "Bernadette nabs Stephanie by the inner tube and drags her, struggling, back to Chris. Stephanie bites Bernadette, attempting to escape...They try to shove Stephanie into the closet. She resists. They both have to hold the door shut."

Attendants of the workshop are invited to participate at whatever level they wish.  Physical participation in the workshop includes consensual physical touch in structured contact improvisations based on the actions of grabbing, pushing, and pulling another person.  Anyone is welcome to participate through observation and discussion.

J.R. Tucker High School Presents: Lafayette No. 1
Thursday October 24, 2024 11:15am - 12:00pm EDT
Over 40,000 people died in the Yellow Fever epidemic of the early 1800s in New Orleans, Louisiana. This left thousands of children orphaned and lost without a place to stay, food to eat, or any kind of care. Many orphans banded together to form families, and this is where we meet Harris, Moab, Geo, and the rest of the orphans who reside at Lafayette No. 1, a cemetery. At Lafayette No. 1, they have a modicum of safety and a place to call home. There’s even a local girl, Lizzie, who brings them bread each day. Lizzie gets to know the group of orphans, but cannot fathom that she would one day be in a position to join them. An unlikely ally, by the name of Julian Poydras, helps the orphans find shelter and ensures that they will never be forgotten. Find out who these orphans were, what they loved and cared about, and how they
were affected by “Yellow Jack”!

New Kent High School Presents: The Healing Machine
Thursday October 24, 2024 4:40pm - 5:25pm EDT
From the early 1950s, until his death in 1986, Emery Blagdon used discarded and unusual materials to create a healing machine in the shed of his Nebraska farm. He believed the machine had the power to heal those who worked on it. Upon his death, Emery’s Healing Machine came to the American Folk Art exhibits at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.
Although inspired by a very real person, author J. Harvey Stone has created a new story with unique characters. The play explores themes of healing, the human spirit, family, abuse, and the culture of bullying. The play explores the notion that art can heal. It begs the question, "Can the simple and brave act of creation become an example of healing?"

Massaponax High School Presents: The Cry of the Peacock
Thursday October 24, 2024 5:35pm - 6:20pm EDT
Young Mary Blanton has suffered some kind of trauma as evidenced by her monster-filled dreams and the horrific scratches on her neck and back. Who did this to an innocent 9-year-old girl, a child who finds comfort through an imaginary pet peacock? Dr. Janice Todd is called before a review board to defend her investigation of the child abuse case. She recounts her discoveries and interviews with the Blanton family, and scenes of Mary’s recent past are brought painfully to life. Three judges, staged as omniscient, skeptical shadows, and several surreal nightmare monsters who taunt and terrify, bring Mary’s abuse into stark scrutiny. In memories and revelations, the line between fact and fiction blurs, leaving one grasping for the truth. The truth that monsters are real, living among us, hiding behind the faces of the people we know and trust. Inspired by real-life tragedy.

CONTENT WARNING: screaming, child abuse, talks of child abuse, talks of alcoholism, animal abuse

Lord of the Flies

by William Golding, adapted for the stage by Nigel Williams
October 17 – November 10, 2024
Dominion Energy Center’s Gottwald Playhouse, 600 E Grace St, Richmond, VA 23219

Evacuated from a war-torn world and marooned on a tropical island when their airplane crashes, a group of pre-adolescent boys find themselves battling for survival with no adults to help them. At first, the fair-minded and mild-mannered Ralph seems a natural leader, but as vestiges of civilization fall away, the more aggressive Jack takes control. Jack organizes the boys into a tribe of hunters, searching for pigs to kill and eat and, more alarmingly, watching for the Beast - a malevolent force that the boys believe is stalking the island.

Gradually the frightened youngsters slip from civilized behavior into red-blooded savagery. They battle with inner demons and external fears, with the weakest and most vulnerable at the highest risk. Ultimately, driven by a primitive bloodlust, childish “games” lead to tragic consequences and Golding’s timeless fable exposes the Beast that is in us all and debunks the myth of childhood innocence.

Friday October 25, 2024 9:25am - 10:10am EDT
When Greta, a young girl living in Nazi Germany, reads that the nearby women's concentration camp is hiring guards, she sees it as a chance to find her place in the world and provide for her sister Lise. But soon she learns the reality of her duties, and so too does she learn how to justify her crimes, heading further and further down the dark road laid by the Third Reich. Kind-hearted Lise is shocked at what her sister becomes, and though the two drift apart, their fates remain inextricably and dangerously linked. FARCICALLY IRREVERENT YET SURPRISINGLY FAITHFUL TO SHAKESPEARE’S LANGUAGE AND STORYLINE, THIS PLAY BLURS THE LINE BETWEEN SLAPSTICK AND EDUCATIONAL DRAMA THE SAME WAY ROMEO AND JULIET BLURS THE LINE BETWEEN COMEDY AND TRAGEDY.

Friday October 25, 2024 11:15am - 12:00pm EDT
A thrilling retelling of a real-life murder mystery. 'It's been a year since I died, and still nobody has found me'. Summer, 1827 In a red barn in Suffolk, Maria Marten awaits her lover. A year later, hidden in a grain sack under the floor of the barn, Maria's body is found, barely identifiable. And the manhunt begins. The Red Barn Murder had all the hallmarks of a classic crime drama: a missing body, a country location, a disreputable squire and a village stuck in its age-old traditions, but whilst
sending shock waves throughout the country, Maria's own story was lost. The Ballad of Maria Marten rediscovers her story, bringing it back to vivid, urgent life.

Charlottesville High School Presents: ANDERSEN
Friday October 25, 2024 5:35pm - 6:20pm EDT
What happens when a playwright, hoping for creative freedom, has to pitch a new play to a mean, penny-pinching Board of Directors? It's a story as old as theatre itself!  Find out what happened to the great story-teller Hans Christian Andersen in this new play, imagined by renowned performance artist Claudia Stevens.  Set in Denmark almost 200 years ago, it could be happening right now: Andersen wants to express himself as a gay man. But the Board wants what will sell- maybe even a repeat of Shakespeare's Hamlet!  So, Andersen has to trick them with an alternative play about toys, hiding himself in the character of a tin soldier with only one leg who cannot find love. Everyone tries to get in on this fantasy play: the performers, members of the Board, even an egotistical "director" highjack Andersen's play. It ends in disaster and murder!  But Andersen has found new courage. He promises the Board a glorious new play about freedom. Its hero is a Black man on a Caribbean island who is free. This will become his most successful play and move all of Denmark to end slavery in their colonies.

Creating Connection: Partner Exercises
Friday October 25, 2024 6:00pm - 7:00pm EDT
The ability to be present with another human being is essential for an actor’s success as a storyteller.  We do scenes with other actors all the time, and are asked to share love, anger, fear, injury and heartbreak, and so much more, when we are performing.  How are we present, open and confident to tell these stories with our scene partners?  It starts one moment at a time.  In this workshop we will lead you through a series of exercises with a partner, some physical, some textual, to create opportunities for you to strengthen the skills it takes to be present and open with another.  Be prepared to work in pairs and we will partner you when you arrive.

  4. At registration, you will need to give the following information: your group name, number of participants, song selection, and your school (if applicable).

  6. The maximum time limit for your performance will be 90 seconds. All music must be cut (Garageband is a great tool for this, along with many others). The file must be emailed to vtalipsyncbattle@gmail.com. Please make sure all music is clean and appropriate.

  10. Please invite all your friends! A lip sync battle is no fun without a crowd! Audience response is part of the judging criteria! So, register, rehearse and most importantly, HAVE FUN!

Judging/Scoring
Each category will be worth 10 points each. The judges’ decisions will be final!
  1. Lip Sync Abilities: How well the performer(s) lip sync the lyrics of the song.
  2. Creativity: How original and creative the performance is. Instead of just standing on stage and lip syncing a song, you are encouraged to use props, choreography, and costumes to impress the judges!
  3. Stage Presence: Again, don’t just stand there! Engage the audience, dance, smile, make eye contact with the judges and the crowd!
  4. Audience Response: Engage the audience, get them clapping, cheering, and singing along.

Improvathon Competition
Saturday October 26, 2024 9:00am - 11:30am EDT
HOW DOES IT WORK?

~16 schools will sign up to compete on Saturday afternoon. These slots are filled on a first come first serve basis.
~Teams are limited to 8 persons. The minimum number of persons on a team is 7.
~All members of a school’s team must be currently enrolled at the school.
~Performance order of the schools will be pre-determined by placing them into a random order generator online. Teams will be informed of their performance order before they arrive at VTA.
~All competing teams must be seated in the audience of the performance space by 9:00am.
~Team members will be handed numbered signs to wear during their performance, and will affix them to the front of their shirts.

The improv game that will be played in the Improvathon is BLIND FREEZE TAG:
~One by one, each team will stand up on stage and line up straight across, facing the audience.
~An adjudicator will call out two numbers. Those two team members wearing those numbers will step forward (downstage), and an adjudicator will deliver them a prompt, which could be one word or a phrase (example: Mac and Cheese).
~Emcee will get the timer out, set it to 6 minutes, and say “go!”
~The two actors will begin improvising a scene based on that Mac and Cheese. When an adjudicator yells “freeze,” the actors will freeze, holding their position. The adjudicator will call out the number of one of the actors standing in the back. The actor will run up and tap one of the actors out–their choice–and take that actor’s place, assuming the exact same physical position. He will then start an entire new improvised scene based on that position, that has nothing to do with Mac and Cheese, with no prompt. It is important that the entering actor is the one who starts the scene. This pattern continues, with the adjudicators calling “freeze” and calling numbers, until the emcee sees the clock reach 6 minutes and yells “time!” All team members will then stop and go sit down.
~The process repeats with the other 15 teams.

~At the conclusion of all 16 teams, there will be a 10-15 break for tabulations.

~At the conclusion of break, the emcee will call to order and thank the judges, etc., and announce the 3 Finalists in no particular order.
~Emcee will call up a representative from each of those 3 teams.
~Reps will draw from a hat a number which determines their Finals performing order. Actors go sit down.

~Team #1 takes the stage in the same way as before (with numbers still on), and the Finals is also BLIND FREEZE TAG, with the same rules.
In the Finals, the three teams will each get 8 minutes.
~At the conclusion of the 3 Finalists, Emcee will thank and dismiss the audience and teams.
1st, 2nd and 3rd Place Improvathon Winners will be announced at the VTA All Conference Awards Banquet on Saturday night.

Saturday October 26, 2024 10:20am - 11:05am EDT
A local theatre teacher tries to pull off his next big production – Guys and Dolls… However, mounting a musical is never an easy task. Especially when the students seem to always want to perform other shows, when your stage manager becomes drunk with power, and when you see something in a student that they don’t see in themselves. And to make matters worse, there aren't nearly enough guys to be the Guys in Guys and Dolls. I mean, the show isn’t supposed to be Dolls and a Guy… A hilarious and poignant look behind the scenes of a middle school theatre program.

Note: Theatrical Intimacy is defined here as physical acts telling the story of heightened emotional states, including intimate gestures such as hugs or caresses, kissing, simulated sexual acts, states of undress and nudity. Classes including or involving students under the age of 18 will not demonstrate or experience simulated sexual acts or nudity, though may cover them in general discussion at the request of the class coordinator in order to prepare students for a future in professional or collegiate theatre.

Creating Connection: Partner Exercises
Saturday October 26, 2024 10:30am - 11:30am EDT
The ability to be present with another human being is essential for an actor’s success as a storyteller.  We do scenes with other actors all the time, and are asked to share love, anger, fear, injury and heartbreak, and so much more, when we are performing.  How are we present, open and confident to tell these stories with our scene partners?  It starts one moment at a time.  In this workshop we will lead you through a series of exercises with a partner, some physical, some textual, to create opportunities for you to strengthen the skills it takes to be present and open with another.  Be prepared to work in pairs and we will partner you when you arrive.

Take 5: Creating Workplaces of Radical Welcome
Saturday October 26, 2024 12:00pm - 1:00pm EDT
Theater workers exist in a space of scarcity, trauma, and challenging power dynamics.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

Take 5 is a policy and practice framework that creates structural protection for everyone involved in the play-making process and offers tools for building healthy, collaborative relationships. It creates situations where trauma is less likely to occur, and productive mechanisms for processing traumatic events that take place in the course of production.

Community, university, and professional theaters all over the country are implementing Take 5 principles to do better work, faster, with more joy and less burnout.

Learn practical tools for creating radically welcoming theater workplaces.

This session is intended for people who work in leadership roles (directors, designers, administrators, stage managers, etc), with students and young adults. We'll specifically address some of the complexities and opportunities of working with minors, working within educational institutions, and preparing students for "real world" situations.

What Are Your Fighting For?!
Saturday October 26, 2024 12:00pm - 1:00pm EDT
In his Guideposts, Shurtleff tells us to ask, "What is your character fighting for?"  Though he means it figuratively, sometimes characters fight for something literally!  Stage Combat is the art of telling stories that turn violent, but doing it safely.  This workshop introduces students to some concepts and techniques used in this specialized area of theatre.  Students should be dressed to move!

Stage Combat Meets Stagecraft
Saturday October 26, 2024 1:30pm - 2:30pm EDT
Solving the quandary of what to do when the script simply states “A fight ensues” should involve more than just a director and their actors. Stage combat can impact (not literally, e hope) almost every aspect of a production, including set, lights, costumes, and props. We will address what designers, producers, stage managers, and other staff must consider when a fight is part of their show. This workshop includes safe weapon show-and-tell, a demonstration of stage combat techniques, and perhaps the opportunity to try a few moves yourself.

The Sensory Friendly Arts Educators Toolkit
Saturday October 26, 2024 1:30pm - 2:30pm EDT
This could be “how to implement sensory-friendly techniques into your art/performance classes”, but it's not. It discusses different sorts of behavior regulating methods that neurodivergent arts students need to be successful and how to sprinkle them for all students throughout your curriculum to make learning and
creativity both accessible and simple. This workshop will introduce you to 3 types of sensory learners and will give you an introduction to common props and strategies to have on hand to make the theatre classroom better for all your students. Creating sensory-friendly curricula does not need to be an
afterthought, expensive, or stressful, it can be implemented early and benefit all types of learners!

The Greenhouse with Q&A featuring Playwright, Harvey Stone
Saturday October 26, 2024 2:00pm - 4:00pm EDT
Content: Discussions of sexuality, some profanity, scenes of simulated tobacco use.

The Greenhouse Program PDF Link

Synopsis: It’s 1972, and a group of five undergraduate men meet every Tuesday and Thursday night at a greenhouse on the campus of the College of William & Mary. They gather together in this queer safe space that seems to have been a haven for the college’s gay men for many years. The threat of a new club on campus has the men worried as they come to terms with what they mean to each other and how much they need the greenhouse.

About the playwright:
J. Harvey Stone('00) is a public-school theatre teacher, director, and writer living in Williamsburg, Virginia. While at William & Mary, Harvey was particularly active in student government and theatre. With a focus on student-led theater, Harvey served on the board of the Covenant Players and was an active part of Sinfonicron Light Opera Company. Under the direction of Dr. Louis E. Catron, Harvey directed and produced the 1999 W&M Premiere Theatre event, an annual series featuring student-written original works. Harvey is in his 25th year of teaching and he currently teaches and directs the theatre program at Jamestown High School. Harvey and his Jamestown students are four-time winners of the “Best Original Play” award from the Virginia Theatre Association. Harvey is pursuing an MFA in Playwriting at The Playwright’s Lab at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia. A simple foodie, Harvey is always looking for the world’s best pimento cheese. www.jharveystone.com

Saturday October 26, 2024 2:25pm - 3:10pm EDT
Some people take Rock-Paper-Scissors (aka Roshambo) seriously. Very seriously. So seriously they organize championship matches with national rankings. Lindsay is number two in the country and she’s not happy losing her top ranking. She’s not above throwing an illegal scipper. What will she do to Taylor, the number one player? Maybe Taylor’s not that keen on playing anyway? Rock-Paper-Scissors isn’t as fun as it used to be.
