Lip Sync Battle
Friday October 25, 2024 9:00pm - 11:00pm EDT
APPLY HERE

Rules and Registration Information
  1. Registration opens September 1st, 2024 and closes October 11th, 2024. Here is the registration form.
  2. There are 24 performance slots and only those 24 individuals/groups will compete.
  3. You are allowed up to 6 participants per act.
  4. At registration, you will need to give the following information: your group name, number of participants, song selection, and your school (if applicable).
  5. You are responsible for all your own props. This includes instruments, microphones, costumes, etc. While we encourage all of these things, please make sure that both props and costumes are school appropriate!
  6. The maximum time limit for your performance will be 90 seconds. All music must be cut (Garageband is a great tool for this, along with many others). The file must be emailed to vtalipsyncbattle@gmail.com. Please make sure all music is clean and appropriate.
  7. As participants begin registering, we will keep an updated list of all song selections available, to prevent any repeats!
  8. The Lip Sync Battle will be held in room E11ABC Theatre 2 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center on Friday at 9:00pm until 11:00pm. There will be a person at the door to check in performers, so please arrive on time!
  9. At the conclusion of all acts, the judges will pick up the top 2 based on the criteria below. The top 2 performers will be asked to LIP SYNC FOR THEIR LIFE! :) There will be a song predetermined for the final number. Be ready to perform this song, should you make it to the final round!
  10. Please invite all your friends! A lip sync battle is no fun without a crowd! Audience response is part of the judging criteria! So, register, rehearse and most importantly, HAVE FUN!

Judging/Scoring
Each category will be worth 10 points each. The judges’ decisions will be final!
  1. Lip Sync Abilities: How well the performer(s) lip sync the lyrics of the song.
  2. Creativity: How original and creative the performance is. Instead of just standing on stage and lip syncing a song, you are encouraged to use props, choreography, and costumes to impress the judges!
  3. Stage Presence: Again, don’t just stand there! Engage the audience, dance, smile, make eye contact with the judges and the crowd!
  4. Audience Response: Engage the audience, get them clapping, cheering, and singing along.

9:00am EDT

Improvathon Competition
Saturday October 26, 2024 9:00am - 11:30am EDT
HOW DOES IT WORK?

~16 schools will sign up to compete on Saturday afternoon. These slots are filled on a first come first serve basis.
~Teams are limited to 8 persons. The minimum number of persons on a team is 7.
~All members of a school’s team must be currently enrolled at the school.
~Performance order of the schools will be pre-determined by placing them into a random order generator online. Teams will be informed of their performance order before they arrive at VTA.
~All competing teams must be seated in the audience of the performance space by 9:00am.
~Team members will be handed numbered signs to wear during their performance, and will affix them to the front of their shirts.

The improv game that will be played in the Improvathon is BLIND FREEZE TAG:
~One by one, each team will stand up on stage and line up straight across, facing the audience.
~An adjudicator will call out two numbers. Those two team members wearing those numbers will step forward (downstage), and an adjudicator will deliver them a prompt, which could be one word or a phrase (example: Mac and Cheese).
~Emcee will get the timer out, set it to 6 minutes, and say “go!”
~The two actors will begin improvising a scene based on that Mac and Cheese. When an adjudicator yells “freeze,” the actors will freeze, holding their position. The adjudicator will call out the number of one of the actors standing in the back. The actor will run up and tap one of the actors out–their choice–and take that actor’s place, assuming the exact same physical position. He will then start an entire new improvised scene based on that position, that has nothing to do with Mac and Cheese, with no prompt. It is important that the entering actor is the one who starts the scene. This pattern continues, with the adjudicators calling “freeze” and calling numbers, until the emcee sees the clock reach 6 minutes and yells “time!” All team members will then stop and go sit down.
~The process repeats with the other 15 teams.

~At the conclusion of all 16 teams, there will be a 10-15 break for tabulations.

~At the conclusion of break, the emcee will call to order and thank the judges, etc., and announce the 3 Finalists in no particular order.
~Emcee will call up a representative from each of those 3 teams.
~Reps will draw from a hat a number which determines their Finals performing order. Actors go sit down.

~Team #1 takes the stage in the same way as before (with numbers still on), and the Finals is also BLIND FREEZE TAG, with the same rules.
In the Finals, the three teams will each get 8 minutes.
~At the conclusion of the 3 Finalists, Emcee will thank and dismiss the audience and teams.
1st, 2nd and 3rd Place Improvathon Winners will be announced at the VTA All Conference Awards Banquet on Saturday night.
